Upper Hay River School

Upper Hay River School has a Dene First Nation student population of 60 students in grades K - 9. We provide introductory programming in the native Dene language, as well as foundational Dene cultural activities for our students such as: drumming, hand games and feeding the fire. Most of our students have learning difficulties and we adjust our teaching to cultivate an inclusive learning environment which allows for us to meet the needs of the students.

Upper Hay River School is located in the community of Meander River, Alberta which is located 71 km north of High Level. Meander River is a First Nations Community with a population of approximately 284 residents in a somewhat isolated community.

Alberta Education is currently focusing on creating First Nations studies for all classrooms regardless of age, grade or ability. We will be able explore the various stories with the assistance of our educational assistants as they are all First Nations and some have attended First Nations residential and day schools. This would act as a year end PBL of that very curriculum as each grade will be responsible for one traditional story of the past.

Kids Go Global - Explore, Act, Inspire.

Kids Go Global is a place for Elementary, Junior and Senior High schools to explore Global Issues and then work alone or with NGOs to take action locally and internationally. It also supports students acting out the issues using theatre and provides opportunities to share student work and projects. It is a partnership between schools, NGOs and Trickster Theatre.
