Uganda - Healthy Mothers, Healthy Communities

Since 2008, Change for Children has been working in the south-western region of Kigezi, Uganda with the Kigezi Healthcare Foundation (KIHEFO) to improve nutrition through agricultural diversification and training.

We are also working to increase community support for women and their families, many whom are caring for the high number of HIV/AIDS orphans in the area.

  • Full Project Summary

    Project activities will include:

    • Expanding the Community Hospital in Kigezi with a Maternity Ward
    • Hiring qualified doctors, nurses and midwives
    • Providing maternal health workshops to local health promoters
    • Establishing an Emergency Community Response network
    • Providing nutrition & agricultural training to women and mothers
    • Building on the existing micro-credit program to allow access to social entrepreneurship and agricultural capital (seeds, tools, livestock)

  • Project Outcome

With the expansion of the community hospital to include a Maternity Ward, and increased doctors, nurses and midwives, over 15,000 women and their children will have access to maternal healthcare. Training on nutrition and safe motherhood will be provided for health promoters living in remote communities, building the capacity for a Community Response Network that will improve early recognition of illness and complication. Remote villages will be equipped with satellite phones for calling the hospital in emergency situations to alert the community ambulance. With agricultural training, along with access to seeds, livestock, and micro-finance, women and their families will be able to better nourish their children and generate income, reducing child malnutrition and poverty and building the capacity for household and community food security.
