The Many Faces of Canadian History

Poplar Ridge School is located about 8km west of the City of Red Deer and is situated between Highways 11 and 11A. We meet the learning needs and styles of all students in Kindergarten to Grade Six, a population of approximately 184 students.

Our students, teachers, and staff are very excited to work with Trickster Theatre in the 2017-18 school year to put on our show on The Many Faces of Canadian History.

We greatly appreciate your help and look forward to sharing our finished work with you!

  • Full Project Summary

Poplar Ridge School will look at “The Many Faces of Canadian History”. Each class will choose a specific issue around the diversity of Canada’s people which they will create a theatre piece about. This could include looking at immigration, community development and inclusivity. Specific performances could highlight the immigration process, integration into a new community and the history of diversity in Canada.

We will also focus on the First Nations history, examining notable people, stories and events throughout Canada’s history. This could include topics such as the implementation of various treaties, First Nations people receiving the right to vote in 1960, or the history of residential schools. This will support our FNMI population by gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for their heritage. We will access our FNMI community members as a resource, asking for information, opinions and stories related to the performance topics.

  • Project Outcome

Our school is focused on creating students that have a deeper understanding of the diversity of Canada and a passion for ensuring that the many faces and perspectives of Canada are heard. A residency with Trickster Theatre will provide a spark to fuel passion for change that will have a lasting impact. Students will be motivated to embrace the diversity of Canadian people, creating strong connections with community members that need their support. It will allow students to use their experiences to extend the curriculum in ways that are personally meaningful.

  • How to create projects

Only a school site admin can set up new projects. Ask you teacher to get help in setting up a project page. Once set up you can write blog articles to support your project.

New Projects can be of many types: an event, a take action project, a study, or a Trickster Residency.

  • What is Trickster Theatre

Trickster Theatre hosts weeklong residencies in Alberta schools. We help create an original show with up to 500 actors - on any theme. We provide the lights, curtains, sounds, costumes, and more!
