The Art of Healing

Atikameg School is a First Nation school located in Northern Alberta, 92km north of High Prairie, offering instruction in English and Woodland Cree Language. Our mission statement is “Success For Everyone,” which means each student who enters the door is a candidate for success. Our student population at present is 254.

Our students, teachers, and staff are very excited to work with Trickster Theatre in the 2017-18 school year to put on our show The Art of Healing.

We greatly appreciate your help and look forward to sharing our finished work with you!

  • Full Project Summary

Atikameg School will focus on issues that we are seeing arise in our community and explore how we can use both modern and traditional strategies to cope with these issues and begin to heal ourselves. We will look into how health and diet play a huge role in emotional well-being. We will brainstorm ways that we can cope with anxiety and stress. We will investigate traditional methods of healing like the medicine wheel, smudging, and sweat lodges. We will listen to our Elders tell us the stories that will keep us connected to our families and culture.

The Elders in our community have expressed to us that they see this as a time of great stress and grief for our students and our community as a whole, so we have chosen the theme The Art of Healing for our residency.

  • Project Outcome

Overall, our goal for this project is to create a show together about healing our community. Our second goal is to share this story via video essays. By committing to this project, we will see our students create stronger connections to their culture and their community. Students will come away with a set of strategies that they can use in their everyday lives to make better decisions and cope with the stresses that they are encountering.

  • How to create projects

Only a school site admin can set up new projects. Ask you teacher to get help in setting up a project page. Once set up you can write blog articles to support your project.

New Projects can be of many types: an event, a take action project, a study, or a Trickster Residency.

  • What is Trickster Theatre

Trickster Theatre hosts weeklong residencies in Alberta schools. We help create an original show with up to 500 actors - on any theme. We provide the lights, curtains, sounds, costumes, and more!
