In poor countries, severe poverty prevents many children from having the most basic items needed for education such as scribblers, pencils, erasers and chalk. This project allows you to purchase the most basic educational tools for orphans at a very reasonable price.

  • Full Project Summary

No matter where you live in the world there are always items that a student needs for school.  In Canada, that it easily found. In poor countries, severe poverty prevents many children from having the most basic items such as scribblers, pencils, erasers and chalk. This means that they may not even be allowed to attend school.

Items as simple as a pencil and a notebook are important for learning.  You need them to do homework and practice lessons like spelling, but they always need to be replaced.  One Child’s Village wants to have these items available at school when the students need them. This way we know they have all the things they need to learn, when they need them.

A “Package of Supplies” consists of the most basic tools needed for the orphan’s education. Because these items are used up at different rates, and are then replaced by purchasing the cheapest bulks quantities possible, some packages may contain more pencils or chalk, while others may contain more scribblers or erasers. We will always ensure that the most needed items, at the most reasonable costs, will be made available when you support the purchase of a Package.

One example may be the purchase of scribblers. One Child’s Village has located a small local business in the Kawangware slum (Nairobi, Kenya) that will construct 120 page scribblers for our school in quantities of 1000 booklets for a cost of about 25 Kenyan Shillings each (this would cost about $310 Canadian dollars for 1000 scribblers). This would provide each of our 200 students with five scribblers (one for each subject) for one school term. A very good value. The remainder of the Package would contain pencils, erasers or chalk as needed.

The cost of each Package of Supplies is $450 Canadian dollars. If additional Packages are supported then we would purchase additional educational tools such as rulers, geometry sets, crayons, paint and other art supplies, and more.

  • Information for Educators

As indicated in the Project Details, we try to purchase all of our supplies and materials from local vendors or community members in order “stretch” our donor dollars. This helps to create as much benefit in the community as possible.

Other school supplies that cannot be locally made, are ordered from community educational supply outlets. By buying bulk quantities we are often able to secure a discount for the items and can sometimes reduce the costs even further so that the capacity to support the children’s needs are maximised.

  • Project Outcome

When we eliminate the burden for families and students to earn the money for basic education supplies, attendance in class increases enormously. Instead of worrying about going to the markets to sell goods or working for the money to pay for these supplies, children can be working on their lessons. Access to items such as pencils, chalk and scribblers also improves the educational model and allows the children to continue their educational experience at home if they are able to transport their lessons with them. Additional access to other educational items, such as art supplies, increases the value of their educational experience tenfold.
